Folding

The basic four-page folder

Folding 4 pageThe simple and most economical method of presenting a piece of literature - aside from the basic single-panel sheet, i.e., a "flyer" or "catalogue/product sheet" - is to fold the piece in some fashion, without any form of mechanical binding.

The most common example of this is an A4 sheet that is folded in half, yielding a four-page A5 folder. Notice that we say four-page folder, because each folded panel becomes two pages. This is very important terminology when describing your project to a Commercial Printer.

Three-panel folder

Folding 6 Page

If we add panels to our "example" sheet, we can increase both the size and reach of our brochure. A three-panel folder becomes six pages; a four-panel folder becomes eight pages, and so on.

There are many configurations possible, but there are also mechanical limitations to consider. The following details most of the folds available.
